Edible formats
Health Canada describes edible cannabis as cannabis intended to be consumed the same way as food, including drinks. Common formats include gummies and soft chews, chocolate and beverages.
The 10 mg THC limit and mg per piece
Federal rules limit one package of edible cannabis to 10 mg of THC in total, however many pieces are inside (see Health Canada's classification guidance). When a package holds separate pieces, the label must also show the THC per unit, according to the federal packaging and labelling guide. For example, a 10 mg package of four equal pieces works out to 2.5 mg per piece.
Start low, go slow
Health Canada suggests that people new to edibles look for products with 2.5 mg of THC or less. It notes that edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect, and up to 4 hours for the full effect (Cannabis: lower your risks), so waiting before taking more lowers the chance of taking too much. Our guide Edibles 101: Start Low and Go Slow goes into more detail.
Storage and child safety
Edibles can be mistaken for ordinary food. Health Canada advises keeping them out of reach, locked away and separate from everyday food and drinks. If you think a child has eaten cannabis, call 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669). If the child loses consciousness or has trouble breathing, call 9-1-1 (Health Canada: cannabis poisonings in children).
