Cannabis Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates differ mainly in texture, how they are made and THC content. The notes below describe formats in general, not what is on the menu.

Types of cannabis concentrates

• Hash: compressed resin glands (trichomes) from the cannabis plant.
• Kief: the loose, fine resin glands collected from dried cannabis flower.
• Shatter: a hard, translucent extract that breaks into pieces like thin glass.
• Wax: a soft, opaque extract with a paste-like texture; crumble is a drier, more brittle form.
• Live resin: an extract made from plants frozen soon after harvest instead of dried and cured; sauce is a thick, liquid form of it.
• Rosin: an extract made with heat and pressure rather than chemical solvents.
• Distillate: a refined oil often used in vape cartridges, which are listed under THC Pens.

THC content

Federal rules cap every cannabis extract at 1,000 mg of THC per container (Health Canada composition requirements). Extracts not sold in discrete units list Total THC on the label in milligrams per gram (mg/g).

Under Schedule 3 of the Cannabis Act, 0.25 g of concentrate counts as 1 g of dried cannabis.

Storing concentrates

Keep concentrates in their original child-resistant container, away from children, youth and pets, and follow the temperature, light and humidity conditions printed on the label.

Making extracts at home with solvents is illegal

In Canada it is illegal to make cannabis products at home with explosive or highly flammable organic solvents such as butane, propane or petroleum naphtha, because of the risk of fire, explosion and health hazards (Health Canada).
